The Evolution of Tourism
The tourism of yesterday is not the tourism of today.
And the tourism of today will not be the tourism of tomorrow.
For decades, many destinations followed the same model: concentrated seasons, peak periods, overcrowded places and short-term visions.
In some cases, it worked.
In many others, it created dependency, instability and missed opportunities.
I believe there is another way. A more sustainable way. A more intelligent way. A way that looks beyond a few weeks of activity and starts thinking in terms of ecosystems.
Tourism today is not only about hotels, flights or attractions.
Tourism is connected to local culture, communities, digital visibility, infrastructure and the stories that territories tell the world.
This is one of the reasons why I created TourismEvolution.com.
Not as a travel website.
Not as a booking platform.
But as a space to reflect on how tourism is changing and where it may be heading in the future.
Here I will share ideas, observations, projects and reflections.
Some people may agree. Others may not. And that is perfectly fine.
The goal is not to have all the answers.
The goal is to ask better questions.
How can destinations become stronger?
How can tourism create value throughout the year?
How can local communities benefit more from the visitor economy?
How can technology support authentic experiences instead of replacing them?
How can we build tourism models that are more resilient, more sustainable and more human?
There is another question I have been asking myself more and more in recent years.
How can tourism businesses regain more control over their future?
Many hotels, B&Bs, holiday homes and tourism operators have become increasingly dependent on large online platforms.
These platforms have brought visibility, bookings and opportunities.
But in some cases they have also created a dependency that can become a risk.
What happens when commissions increase?
What happens when an algorithm changes?
What happens when a business loses direct contact with its own customers?
I believe tourism businesses should work to regain a healthier balance.
Platforms can be useful tools.
But they must remain tools.
They should not become the owners of the relationship between a business and its guests.
This is why I believe it is increasingly important to invest in direct visibility, digital identity, content, natural traffic and authentic relationships with one’s own audience.
These are some of the themes I will explore through this project.
I will also talk about deseasonalization, territorial ecosystems, innovation, digital transformation and new opportunities for the future of tourism.
Tourism is evolving.
The world is evolving.
And perhaps it is time for us to evolve as well.
Not to follow a trend.
Not to chase the fashions of the moment.
But to build a tourism industry that is more intelligent, more sustainable and more free.
Because the future does not necessarily belong to those who are bigger.
It belongs to those who are capable of understanding change and transforming it into opportunity.
And perhaps the most interesting part of the journey is not where tourism has been.
But where tourism is going.
Because the future waits for no one.
